Iggy Pop/OPN – The Pure And The Damned
I’ve no idea what he’s singing about here, but it all sounds very deep and meaningful in a looking-back-at-my-eventful-life Johnny Cash sort of way.
Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers – Moanin’
One of the best ‘hard bop’ tracks of the late 50s. By the time Blakey was eleven he was a full-time musician, playing the piano to earn money. He eventually become a band leader and a hugely talented drummer with the Jazz Messengers, who he was with for 35 years until his death in 1990.
Gazelle Twin – Exorcise
Very few artists still have the power to shock and disturb, but Gazelle Twin manages to make me uncomfortably excited in a way I haven’t felt since watching the darkest recesses of Top Of The Pops in the early 1980s.
Cate Le Bon – The Light
I’m really going to try my best not to mention Nico here. Damn. Failed. Anyway, it’s a beautiful voice. A West Walian Nico. This is the first Welsh artist ever to feature on Steve Reich In The Afternoon. From what I can gather, the songs were formed in California and Cumbria in between stints of furniture making.
The Streets – Same Old Thing
Let’s not get too excited. There will be another Trump on the way in 4, 8 or 12 years, as the pendulum will inevitably swing the other way.
