RAMP – Daylight (1977). Probably the funkiest song in all of human existence. The bass player is the legendary Nate White, who once said “when I first laid my hands on the bass guitar I knew I would play it forever”.

Donald Byrd – (Falling Like) Dominoes (1975). Jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd has a PhD in music education.

Lonnie Liston Smith – Expansions (1975). Jazz-funk, soul-jazz, fusion. Whatever you want to call it, this is another timeless piece of the jigsaw from the 70s.

Randy Crawford/The Crusaders – Street Life (1979). Despite being an American citizen, Randy won ‘Best British Female Solo Artist’ at the 1982 Brit awards.

Loose Ends – Hanging On A String (1985). The first British band ever to top the US Billboard R&B Chart, and possibly the best ever use of that weird 808 cowbell sound.
