Baba Stiltz – Palats
Baba creates an all-time house classic that builds and builds, ‘ruins’ it in the middle with the most ill-advised annoying foghorn sound you’ve ever heard, and then brings the house classic back in and everything’s ok again.
Captain Beefheart And His Magic Band – I’m Glad
It’s difficult to believe that this is the same Don Glen Vliet who two years later made the experimental colossus ‘Trout Mask Replica’ – but it is!
Pastor TL Barrett And The Youth For Christ Choir – Like A Ship
The force with which the choir joins in with this one is breathtaking, as is the almost-but-not-quite-out-of-tune note they hold masterfully later on. Barrett went from the high of creating this in 1971 to being charged with orchestrating a pyramid scheme in 1989.
Joao Gilberto/Stan Getz – Para Machuchar Meu Coração
Off the classic Getz/Gilberto album from 1964 that features the girl from Ipanema, this is another less heralded classic, translated as ‘To Squash My Heart’ – written by the most influential pre-bossa nova composer in Brazil, Ary Barroso.
Brigitte Bardot/Serge Gainsbourg – Bonnie And Clyde
Jesus christ this is so good, even the annoying repeating monkey sound can’t ruin it. The two voices are heavenly, the violin and guitar soar, the song is both catchy and slightly unhinged, and hearing Gainsbourg and Bardot say ‘Clyde Barrow’ and ‘Bonnie Parker’ in amongst the French is an absolute treat.
